What do you do at the end of the day?
What I do depends so much on where I am. When I'm near a lake or body of water I always want to spend time watching the water move and the sun dip beyond the horizon. When I was in Marathon, Ontario, on the coast of Lake Superior last month I spent almost every day watching the sunset.
I also love to wind down in the evening with a cup of tea and asking my partner about his favourite part of the day. It's a nice reflective moment when we can think back on our day with gratitude. Even though we usually spend most of the day together and I can sometimes guess what he'll say, he sometimes surprises me with his answers. I think this has been a really positive improvement to our evenings because it reminds us to have a positive outlook even when other things aren't going our way.
My favourite way to unwind at the end of the day is to listen to a yoga nidra track. I used to have a really hard time falling asleep because I would be busy reviewing the day, thinking about plans for the next day, agonizing over life choices, and so on. Yoga nidra is a chance to clear my mind before I go to bed. Instead of postures and positions, yoga nidra "is a state in which the body is completely relaxed, and the practitioner becomes systematically and increasingly aware of the inner world by following a set of verbal instructions. This state of consciousness is different from meditation in which concentration on a single focus is required." (Wikipedia).
This has been one of the greatest additions to my nighttime rituals. I've found that I'm more relaxed and I have better sleep when I am fully relaxed as I fall asleep. There are a lot of different tracks out there so I recommend testing out a couple until you find someone with a voice and style that resonates with you.
